Sodium benzoate is a white, crystalline or granular powder or flakes, typically odorless or with a faint odor, and is hygroscopic. It's primarily known as a preservative used to prevent spoilage in various products by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi. Its chemical formula is C7H5NaO2 and it is the sodium salt of benzoic acid. 

Avobenzone is a chemical compound, specifically a dibenzoylmethane derivative, widely used in sunscreens as a broad-spectrum UVA filter. It absorbs ultraviolet (UV) light, protecting the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which can cause sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. While effective, avobenzone is known to be photounstable, meaning it degrades in sunlight, so it's often combined with other sunscreen agents to enhance its stability and overall efficacy.
